Athens Music Week’s (AMW) first edition will be a combination of surprising discoveries, connections and new friendships and at the same time, a gathering for the promotion of music talents and fresh ideas.
AMW was born on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the European Music Day that started in Athens in 1999, thanks to the cooperation of the NPO MESO Music Events with the Cultural, Sports and Youth Organization of the Municipality of Athens (OPANDA) and in connection with the joint efforts for the promotion of Athens as an international destination for innovation in the music industry with the Technopolis City of Athens and the INNOVATHENS powered by Samsung.
Held under the auspices of the Hellenic Ministry of Tourism, the Greek National Tourism Organisation, the Government of the Region of Attica, with the support of OPANDA, the Technopolis City of Athens, the Greek network of the European Music Day and the EYED Special service of Rights Management, and in collaboration with the European Music Day Association (Brussels), Linecheck Festival & Meeting (Milan), MamA Festival & Convention (Paris), Music International Lisboa (Lisbon), Nouvelle Prague Showcase Conference (Prague) and the UN Convention (Manchester), Athens Music Week 2019 edition settles the foundations for the first synergies of international appeal.
From June 17 until the 23rd, AMW connects educational activities, international meetings, networking events, lectures, music presentations, showcases and live music events through a common communication framework addressing to audiences, artists and professionals from Greece and abroad.

Assomusica, Italian association of organisers and producers of live shows, and ELMA, European Live Music Association, express satisfaction for approval with a vast majority by the European Parliament of the Creative Europe Programme, which will double the funds to support the cultural sector, including live music shows. The adoption by the plenary of the European Parliament represents a major milestone in the path towards valorization of live music.
President of Assomusica Vincenzo Spera declared: “Finally live music has been recognised as an asset for the European cultural and creative sectors.”
Thanks to the engagement of Assomusica new funding instruments will be made available for live music shows. According to the Parliament’s report “Music, in all its forms and expressions, and in particular contemporary and live music, is an important component of the cultural, artistic and economic heritage of the Union. It is an element of social cohesion, multicultural integration and youth socialisation and it serves as a key instrument to enhance culture, including cultural tourism. The music sector should therefore be a particular focus of the specific actions (…) in terms of financial distribution and targeted actions. Tailor-made calls and instruments should help boost the competitiveness of the music sector and address some of the specific challenges it faces.”
Among the objectives of the programme the Parliament specified the “support to the music sector: promoting diversity, creativity and innovation in the field of music, in particular live music sector, also through networking, the distribution and promotion of a diverse European musical works (…), training, participation in and access to, music, audience development, the visibility and recognition of creators, promoters and artists, in particular young and emerging ones”. Therefore, the European Commission cannot fail to issue calls for projects related to this objective.
President Vincenzo Spera concluded: “It is our hope that Member States Government will not miss the opportunities granted by the new Programme”
The 21st of June is the longest day of the year, and over the past 20 years, the summer solstice finds thousands of amateur, grass root talents and renowned artists performing live for thousand of people all over the country. It is in fact also a unique opportunity for wider audiences to discover artists and music of all genres.

The Culture Committee of the European Parliament has expressed its position on the programme unanimously approving the innovative amendments aimed at strengthening tools and funding dedicated to live music shows. This is therefore a good occasion to debate how to improve the design of the programme and the investments in this sector, which constitutes an engine for growth at local level and for the made in Italy in the cultural sector.
We will discuss this on 15 March at the conference organised by Assomusica, European Live Music Association (ELMA) and Confcommercio – Impresa Cultura Italia.
